The Overflow of Inexhaustible Strength
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13 NKJV
We've all been there: staring at a massive, complicated task and trying
to psych ourselves up. Maybe it's witnessing to a difficult colleague,
forgiving a deep wrong, or simply breaking a persistent sinful habit. We try to
put ourselves into action, muster up more effort, and treat our spiritual life
like the farmer attempting to plow 300 acres with a horse and plow. The result
is burnout and a sense of spiritual inadequacy.
This past Sunday’s sermon emphasized that the solution to our spiritual
dilemma is not in our activity, but in God’s revelation of His power toward us.
Philippians 4:13 is often quoted out of context, but its true power lies in the
understanding that the "I can do all things" is completely dependent
on "Christ who strengthens me." This isn't a motivational cheer for
personal ambition; it’s a confident declaration of reliance on the immeasurable
greatness of God's power—the very power that raised Christ from the dead. When
we pray for a revival of revelation about our power, we are asking God to help us
rely more on His inexhaustible, abiding strength and less on our limited human
effort, allowing Him to work through us to accomplish His purposes.
When you face a task this week that feels too big (physically,
emotionally, or spiritually), replace the thought "I can't do this"
with the declaration, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens
me," and wait on Him to move.
